Does Natrual Mean Better?
Does Natural Mean Better?
Many people regard natural substances as being more wholesome or more healthy than artificial chemicals, but this is not necessarily the case. S0-called "natural" products may in fact contain more preservatives than their synthetic counterparts, to prevent bacteria from breeding in the more nutritious natural ingredients, and the harm these preservatives can cause may often outweight the benefits the natural ingredient can bring.
People argue, justifiably, that our bodies are not designed to deal with unnatural chemicals and, therefore, we should not be exposed to them. Three points must be remembered, however.
First, the human body is remarkably good at dealing with unwanted chemicals and excreting them harmlessly. Second, many natural substances, are extremely harmful - both plants aand animals produce some of the most deadly poisons known to Man.
Finally, the track record of artificial chemicals in our food and personal care products must speak for itself. These ingredients have caused relatively few serious illnesses. Rather than condemn them out of hand, perhaps we should ask the question: are these chemicals added for my benefit or for the manufacturer's profits? If the answer is the latter, perhaps we should buy another brand.
